SICILIAN CERAMICS MAREMORO
It all starts in a workshop, where the heat of the ovens transforms the clay into pottery and where skilled hands shape it into works of art.
Maremoro’s origins lie in the intertwining of different experiences and the long tradition of this ancient skill handed down over the centuries, creating a brand with a typically Sicilian flavour.
Expert Sicilian craftsmanship once more has a chance to shine thanks to a shared love for our land, its passion, its products and its masterpieces.
THE UNIQUENESS OF EACH PIECE
Each of our products is the result of an artisanal process rooted in the tradition of Caltagirone ceramics.
We produce unique products which have a taste of art, sea, land and fire, elements that bring an authentic and unmistakable character to our creations.
No Maremoro piece is identical to another, and the presence of small irregularities is a sign of uniqueness which can be attributed to the craftsmanship involved in its creation.
By choosing a piece from the Maremoro collection, you will not only be taking home a complement of furniture, but an authentic work of art, with a thousand-year-old story.
THE CREATION OF OUR SICILIAN CERAMICS
The realization of our handcrafted products follows ancient traditions and is a complex process which takes many days.
FIRST STEP
Everything begins when the raw material – the clay – is placed inside the gypsum moulds which allow the first step of the process to take place.
Once the mould is opened, the object is thoroughly cleaned and hand-finished, with special attention paid to the details.
The clay used for Sicilian pottery is extremely porous and soft, and is skilfully moulded by hand.
It is at this point that, following strict rules, the craftsmen create the decorations which are then applied: frills, crowns, curls, prickly pears, citrus fruit, leaves, flowers, necklaces and chillies are shaped and applied by hand until the desired result is achieved.
When the piece is dry and we are satisfied with how it looks, it is given its first firing.
THE FIRING
To become ceramics, the vase must undergo two firings in a kiln.
The first is used to transform it into terracotta, and the second to turn it into ceramic.
Once the first firing, which lasts thirty-six hours at a temperature of about 980°C, is completed, the piece is slowly cooled. At this stage, it is called “biscuit”.
To be transformed into ceramics it is then immersed in tanks containing the enamel which will give the object its distinctive, eternally shiny appearance.
After the enamel has dried naturally and without any changes in temperature, it is hand-painted with brushes and then given a second firing of about thirty-six hours in a kiln at a temperature of 920°C.
